A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session
Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing
A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric
Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions
A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance
Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons
A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)
A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity
Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes
Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase
A top of the range steam iron packed with all the usual features you love about top-end steam irons. It has also craftily nicked the iTemp technology from its bigger steam generator cousins.
I Think Therefore iTemp
iTemp is Bosch's whizzy new techno gubbins that does away with having to think about different fabric types and what heat setting you need. The iron is a bit of a know-it-all and does all this for you. Silk blouse to denim jeans without thinking, just iron! (yes unfortunately you still have to do the moving the iron bit, it's not that clever).
There's bags of power on tap, 2800 watts to be precise (I've counted them all) so the iron remains hot-to-trot all day long. There's 50g of continuous steam and a hulking great 200g steam shot for particularly bothersome wrinkles.
Tipping the Scales
There are plenty of other goodies within its trendy 'smokey' blue and white case including auto off, drip-stop and a generous 3 metre power cable. It's rather plus-sized in the water tank department at 380ml - most irons are around 300ml. This does make it rather heavy when full of water at almost 2 kilos so bear that in mind if weight lifting is not your thing.
Some users report that the water level is difficult to see through the coloured plastic case although this is a common gripe with many irons these days. Apart from that, and the scales-busting 2kg weight, there's nothing bad to say about this iron really.
A weighty iron but with an impressive specification including automatic controls”
