A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session

Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing

A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric

Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions

A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance

Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons

A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)

A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity

Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes

Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase

In Detail

This iron is the top boss, the big cheese in the Braun range and has all the bells and whistles (not literally) to prove it. It also sports a rather natty open ended handle design which gives a bit more room for big hands like mine.

Saphir, So Good
Being the range topper, you'd expect a special soleplate and this iron doesn't disappoint. It's a smooth 6 layer job made from Saphir which Braun says is 4 times stronger than stainless steel and virtually scratchproof. - you can even scrub it with steel wool if you've got any lying around. Like other models in the range, the soleplate has a good covering of well-placed steam holes including a good group of them right at the tip.

Facts and Figures
Continuous steam can be one of six settings right up to a very respectable 50g per minute, and there's an epic 200g steam shot. There's an auto-off safety feature of course, and the weight is about average at 1.33kg when empty and 1.67kg when full with 400ml of water. Initial heat-up time from cold to max is 55 seconds - pretty good considering it only has 2400 watts of power. Most range-toppers now will have 2600 or more.

On the Ball
The cable is 240cm according to our ruler and is mounted on a swivelling ball joint (an improved version of the one found on other 7 series irons) which you can fix to the left or right. It really helped in keeping the cord away from the ironing because you really don't want to iron the cord. A 2 year manufacturer's warranty is included, and they've very generously supplied a water beaker and printed manual in the box. Sometimes, it's just the simple things isn't it?

This is a very smooth iron that delivers a good amount of steam and its unique open handle design makes it very comfortable to use. The soleplate is excellent and promises to be very durable long-term.

Braun by name, brawny by nature with a good spec and a very comfortable handle
