A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session

Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing

A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric

Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions

A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance

Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons

A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)

A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity

Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes

Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase

In Detail

Picking through the huge and sometime baffling Philips range of irons, we've picked this as the best bread-and-butter workhorse. A dependable and first-rate steamer at a sensible price.

Everyday Hero
This iron ticks all the boxes for everyday ironing so there's not a great deal it could do with, except perhaps a few more watts to maintain the heat quicker. Steam output is a respectable 45g per minute with a strong 170g shot when the creases start to fight back. With a below-average weight of 1.25kg and a soft grip handle it's designed for long-distance ironing so if this is you then sorry, but at least it will be comfortable.

Control Freak
It has manual controls with the familiar dial rather than that new fangled automatic business, so if you like to be in control of the heat and steam this is for you. The soleplate is their classic ceramic Steamglide affair which offers good, smooth gliding and scratch resistance. Other plus points include a full 3 metre cable and an auto-off safety feature - switches the iron off if you leave it face down for more than 30 seconds.

Lightweight but powerful with manual controls, auto off and a 3 metre cable
