A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session

Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing

A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric

Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions

A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance

Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons

A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)

A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity

Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes

Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase

In Detail

Philips are one of the most popular brands for steam irons and the sheer depth of products can be quite bewildering. Here's hoping to make some sense of it in one sentence: this iron is the cheapest in their current range with automatic controls.

Dial or No Dial
OptimalTemp is what Philips calls its auto control system, meaning you don't need to set a specific temperature setting for different fabrics - just iron! In fact, they've thrown away the dial leaving you with just a couple of buttons for the usual steam and spray functions. Philips guarantee this iron will never cause burns to any ironable fabric. A bold claim indeed.

It's Got Sole - Plate
Despite its mid-range price, it does come with the Ultraglide Plus soleplate - the top man (but one) in Philips soleplates that offers the smoothest glide and best scratch resistance. A long 3 metre cord is included, as too is auto-off. At 1.5 kg (or 1.485kg according to Philips very precise notes) it's not as heavy as some of their irons, but slightly more so than some other irons with a similar steam output.

A simple to use iron with above average steam and a great soleplate from the world's number one iron brand! There are some more expensive OptimalTemp irons in the range, up to double the cost in fact, but I would struggle to see the extra benefit beyond a slightly big steam shot.

A premium soleplate, good steam output and automatic controls at an attractive price
