A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session

Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing

A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric

Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions

A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance

Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons

A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)

A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity

Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes

Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase

In Detail

From the expansive and sometimes perplexing Philips range, we've chosen this as our best buy in the entry level category.

For a few quid more than a top end steam iron, this unit gives you a lot more water as well as a more lightweight hand iron (1.1 kilos compared to around 1.5 kilos for a normal iron with no water). Sadly, this unit doesn't have auto off or automatic controls, but you can fill the water tank while the iron is in use, and the iron itself locks to the base to make carrying around easier.

Steam output at a continuous 100g is much better than a regular iron though the steam shot of 140g is sometimes beaten by top end steam irons. Steam pressure of 4.5bar seems a little low compared to the 6bar plus of rivals - but then they can often cost twice as much.

This is a budget level steam generator from a well known name that offers average steam output and has some nice features as well as being keenly priced. It's ideal if you are looking for something more powerful than a normal steam iron but don't want to spend too much. Its more compact size is also helpful if you're short on space, though it's still a bit on the bulky side.

Budget steam generator from a well known brand. Good value for the power on offer
