A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session
Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing
A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric
Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions
A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance
Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons
A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)
A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity
Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes
Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase
Rowenta is that most German of German companies, except it is now owned by French conglomerate Groub SEB which also owns rival Tefal and a host of other household appliance makers. Luckily, they've left Rowenta to do their thing and more importantly their products are still made in Germany as proudly displayed on the case here.
It's a high quality product and very much a premium brand as you can tell from the price. Weighty too at 1.6kg empty, which is great for crushing creases but no so if your wrists aren't what they used to be. Unusually, Rowenta have shunned ceramic soleplates which almost all other brands use, and have stuck with a high quality stainless steel number with no less than 400 (count 'em!) steam holes and a laser finish (makes the steel harder and more scratch resistant).
Yet another manufacturer jumping on the auto bandwagon, the smart AutoSteam technology regulates steam and heat for the fabric type being ironed - whether that's delicate silk or chunky denim.
Vorsprung Durch Rowenta
Continuous steam is output at 50g per minute and there's a mega 220g steam shot - pretty much the largest for a hand iron thanks to its powerful steam pump. German engineering you see! It's a bit tricky to see the water level - a common gripe on most irons but we'd have thought the clever clogs at Rowenta might have devised a solution. Naturally there's auto-off and a 2.5 metre cord is ok (3 metres would have been better for the money).
Solid and dependable with a bullet-proof soleplate and auto steam technology, this Rowenta is the one for you if you just want the best at any cost.
High performance iron with great build quality and steam output, automatic steam and heat”
