A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session

Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing

A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric

Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions

A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance

Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons

A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)

A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity

Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes

Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase

In Detail

Bill Russell and Peter Hobbs once worked for Morphy Richards, had a bit of a falling out with "the management" and left to start their own company, as you do. Their first product was the world's first automatic coffee percolator, one of their latest is this cheap as chips iron. Any good or should we stick with the coffee?

Bill and Peter's Excellent Adventure
It might cost around twenty quid, but it does possess all the minimum requirements we need for a steam iron. Ceramic soleplate, check. At least 2400 watts, check. Three metre cable, check. not bad for starters. Continuous steam is output at up to 45g per minute and a steam shot of 135g is average overall but good for the price.

Modest Price
Considering the alternative at this modest price level, namely a YingTong Co. special that will either blow up after first use or just electrocute you, this iron does come with a surprisingly wide array of decent features backed up by a well-known make and a 2 year warranty. There's no auto-off safety mechanism which isn't surprising at this price really - so just be careful out there!

Cheap as chips but much more effective at ironing, this steamer has a good specification for the price and if all you need is something half-decent to sit in the cupboard when needed, this ones's for you.

A cheap iron from a well known brand with good steam output and a long 3 metre cable
