A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session
Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing
A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric
Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions
A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance
Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons
A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)
A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity
Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes
Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase
It's musical chairs at the moment with Tefal generators as the new 9000 series comes on board, but that means the older but still very capable 8900 series is available at good prices.
The GV8962 is part of Tefal's top level "Pro Express" range for serious power users that now all featuring minimal user controls. In fact there are just 3 settings, with the iron automatically delivering the right amount of steam and heat. Other than that it features all the other virtues of the Tefal range with a large water tank and their innovative and easy to use anti-calc system.
It might be an older model now but it's still got it, performance wise. There's continuous steam at up to 120g/min pushed out at an epic 6.5 bar pressure (a lot of other more expensive generators still can't match this) while a steam shot of 430g is pretty mighty too. There's also a handy lock and cord-winding system for when you've finally managed to blitz your ironing pile.
It's a big and bulky unit so don't forget to check your ironing board can take it! Prices do fluctuate a bit, but at around £170 it's great value.
6.5 bar steam pressure is super powerful along with a huge steam shot and auto controls”
