A higher wattage allows the iron to heat up quicker and maintain that heat during your ironing session

Continuous steam output in grams per minute. Higher output = quicker ironing

A short, powerful burst of steam to penetrate deep into creased or thick fabric

Weight of the hand iron without water. Heavier irons can be more stressful on your wrist over long ironing sessions

A ceramic soleplate will give the smoothest gliding and best scratch resistance. More expensive models might also have a special coating for even better performance

Higher water capacities will mean faster ironing with less time to stop and fill up, but can also increase the weight of hand irons

A longer cord gives greater flexibility, particularly when ironing large items. (For steam generators this figure is the cord length from the hand iron to base unit)

A safety feature that turns the iron off after a period of inactivity

Reduces limescale build-up in your iron to help prevent spitting and clogging of the steam holes

Standard manufacturers warranty period from time of purchase

In Detail

Whoosh! Turbo Pro just arriving. There are no go faster stripes but this new deluxe model from Tefal does sport a nice black and green colour scheme.

Turbo Pump
The 'turbo' part refers to the blistering 210g steam shot, though we're not sure if there is an actual turbo in there, probably just a powerful pump. Pump Pro doesn't sound as good though does it? Continuous steam is emitted at a respectable 50g per minute which puts it on par with top models from rival makes.

Watts Up
The wattage of 2600 isn't the highest available but is better than average while a clever calc collector device at the back of the iron is similar to the one on their steam generators. It captures all the limescale particles in one place - just remove and rinse and you're done! It also has auto controls to set the heat and steam so you don't have to, but you can also switch to manual mode with the traditional 3 dot settings.

This iron is very, powerful, easy to use and safe with auto-off but the power cord is disappointingly short at only 2 metres - surely they could find a few pence to stick on another metre?

2600 watts of power and a 210g steam boost. Calc collector removes limescale easily
